Managing Asthma, Allergies and Anaphylactic Reactions in the School Setting

Purpose

This program designed to provide nurses working in the school setting a better understanding of how to manage students and staff with asthma, allergies and anaphylaxis reactions. Treatment, prevention, management and available resources will be discussed.

Credit

Licensed Nurses: Upstate AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by The South Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this program, attendees will receive 5 contact hours.

NOTE: Successful completion of the program requires attendance for at least 90 percent of the course and a completed evaluation by the participant. 

Objectives

Discuss how asthma affects children.

Identify current treatments for asthma and features of the asthma –friendly school.

Describe the value of the SAMPRO program.

Identify challenges of asthma for the school nurse, barriers to control, and approaches for improvement.

Identify asthma resources available

Describe how allergy care in the school setting is a part of the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing.

Identify the signs and symptoms of allergies and anaphylaxis and describe appropriate actions for prevention of allergy exposures and for an emergency response.

Describe the 4 different school care plans and their use in students with anaphylaxis.

Identify 4 sources of quality, evidence-based resources for allergy and anaphylaxis care.

Teach students proper inhaler technique.

Discuss exercise-induced asthma.

Discuss local resources related to asthma.

Speaker List

Michael Bowman, MD, PhD, is a Pediatric Pulmonologist, Professor Emeritus at the Medical University of South Carolina, and a board member of the South Carolina Asthma Alliance.

Sally Schoessler, MSEd, BSN, RN, is the Director of Education for the Allergy and Asthma Network, and a former school nurse.

Christie Heaton, MBA, RRT, AE-C,  is a Respiratory Therapist, Certified Asthma Educator, Camp Asthmania Director and member of the Asthmania Academy Team at AnMed Health in Anderson, South Carolina.

Allison Ranck, MD, FAAP, is a Pediatric Hospitalist, the Medical Director for Asthmania Academy and the Medical Director of Inpatient Pediatrics at the AnMed Health Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Mike Shoemaker, MBA, RRT-NPS, AE-C, is a Manager in the Respiratory Care Services Department at AnMed Health Women’s and children’s Hospital and the site coordinator of the Asthmania Academy (ASME Certified).

Amanda ThrasherRRT, AE-C, is a Respiratory Therapist and Certified Asthma Educator on the Asthmania Academy Team.
