2017 Update for School Nurses

Purpose

This class will provide school nurses with the knowledge, skills, and resources to respond to a trauma event occurring in school.    It will also provide diabetes knowledge, tools and resources to facilitate effective diabetes management for students at school.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Summarize basic principles and methods used in triage in response to school-based trauma event
  2. Discuss the role of the school nurse in response to a school-based trauma event
  3. Apply the basic components of diabetes care at school.
  4. Identify basics of insulin.
  5. Identify tools and resources to keep children with diabetes safe in school.
  6. Discuss concepts of continuous glucose monitoring and the importance of recognizing differentials in readings related to actual blood sugar with a finger stick.

Continuing Education Credit:

Licensed Nurses:  Upstate AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the South Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this program, attendees will receive 4.5 contact hours.

Fee: $90.00 for non-Upstate AHEC members; $ 0 for AHEC members

Successful completion of the program requires attendance for at least 90 percent of the course and a completed evaluation by the participant.

Visit our classes page to view all of the Upstate AHEC classes available at this time.

Click on the class you wish to register for and scroll to the bottom of that page under MEMBER TYPE. Choose either (a) the “Consortium Member” link or (b) the “Non-Consortium Member”. To learn if your employer is a consortium member, click here.

Click the “Add to Cart” button.

When you have selected all the courses that you wish to attend, choose the “Checkout with PayPal” button. This step is necessary to move you to the “Checkout” page even if you DO NOT owe a registration fee.

Enter all contact information requested on the “Checkout” page and click “Submit Order”.

The next page will give you an order number. If you have registered for a course(s) with no fees, your registration is complete and you need only click on “Submit Order”!

If you have registered for a class with a fee, you will need to click on “Confirm Order”. This will take you to the PayPal Website.

Once these steps are complete, you will receive two emails. The first email will be a notification of your registration and the second email will be a notification that your registration is complete.
