Health Professions Students

The Upstate AHEC Health Professions Student (HPS) Program facilitates the placement of health professions students in clinical rotations with community-based preceptors located primarily in rural and underserved areas of Upstate South Carolina. We provide this service to all South Carolina health professional disciplines; as well as, out of state health professional disciplines, upon request. HPS services bridges the gap between the academic institutions and the clinical site experiences. It is our goal to encourage the health professions students to return to the rural and/or medically underserved communities to practice once they have graduated. HPS Coordinators help with various health disciplines including, but not limited to, medicine, physician assistant, nursing, physical therapy and pharmacy. Services provided vary according to the institutions curriculum requirements and goals of each academic program, but usually include the following:

Interface with clinical programs at South Carolina academic institutions
Identification of preceptors and clinical rotation sites
Assistance in locating housing resources
Orientation of students to the community
Networking with the community health agencies
Linking students to community health projects
Conducting clinical site visits
Facilitate South Carolina Rural Interprofessional Program of Training (SCRIPT)
Facilitate the Interprofessional Service Learning Projects (ISLP)
Provide technology support

SCHOOLS & UNIVERSITIES

Upstate AHEC serves all schools in the state preparing health professionals. Our priority commitment is to those students entering primary care, to those professions where there is a shortage of providers and to those counties that are medically underserved. We feel that internet access is important to allow the student a means of communicating back to the home school, as well as access to online library resources. We will work with each individual student to determine the best way to accomplish this goal.
