Over the next few months, attendees in several of Upstate AHEC’s upcoming classes are going to have the opportunity to participate in more than just the program for which they registered.  They will become part of an exciting new experiment in AHEC’s “green” adventure.  For certain classes, instead of reproducing presentation handouts for distribution at the program – an approach that inevitably results in significant paper waste – Upstate AHEC will be electronically mailing out advance copies of the handouts to pre-registered program participants via email attachment. 

The decision to not print handouts in the traditional manner will bring both environmental and economic benefits to Upstate AHEC.  Reducing the printed material will help lessen our footprint on the environment and avoiding speculative pre-program duplication of presentation materials has the potential of saving thousands of dollars in printing and paper costs.  In light of significantly rising speaker and materials costs as well as recent state budget cuts, and consistent with Upstate AHEC’s commitment to being as environmentally responsible as possible, we believe this is the right time to test out this new approach to document reproduction.

Our Continuing Education Consultants have carefully chosen the handful of programs that will serve as our test cases, receiving permission for the change from the program’s presenter prior to implementation.  Post-program, CE Consultants will be surveying, with great interest, both participants and presenters to determine their satisfaction with this new approach. Because we have been successful in distributing handouts to our Upstate AHEC board members in this manner for more than a year, we are optimistic about the outcome of the CE programs experiment; however, we are anxious to hear what our constituents think.
