Health Professions Students

The Upstate AHEC Health Professions Student (HPS) service facilitates placements of health profession students in clinical rotations with preceptors located primarily in rural and underserved areas of upstate South Carolina.  We work closely with schools and departments of health professions within our state as well as out of state schools and departments of health professions.  By working with academic institutions and community-based training sites, students have an opportunity to experience health care in a real work setting, experience interprofessional teamwork, and develop an understanding of the needs of underserved communities.

Our services provided vary according to the curriculum requirements of each academic institution but usually include the following:

  • Interface with clinical programs at South Carolina and out of state academic institutions
  • Recruitment of preceptors and clinical rotation sites
  • Assistance with student housing
  • Providing community orientation
  • Linking student to community-based projects
  • Conducting clinical site visits
  • Facilitating interprofessional/interdisciplinary education activities
  • Provide technology support

SCHOOLS & UNIVERSITIES

Upstate AHEC serves all schools in the state preparing health professionals. Our priority commitment is to those students entering primary care, to those professions where there is a shortage of providers and to those counties that are medically underserved. We feel that internet access is important to allow the student a means of communicating back to the homeschool, as well as access to online library resources. We will work with each individual student to determine the best way to accomplish this goal.
