Academy Goal:
The South Carolina AHEC Health Careers Academy is designed to develop culturally competent, resilient, academically proficient, and self-confident future health care leaders

Academy Purpose:
The South Carolina AHEC Health Careers Academy is a health career exploration experience for high school students. Activities which demonstrate the use of communications, math and science among practicing health professionals make up the curriculum specifically designed for future health professions students of South Carolina. One-on-one mentoring and parental involvement are major components of the Academy.

Upstate AHEC’s Health Careers Academy offers opportunities for students at the high school level to gain insight into the world of health care. This program strives to increase the number of under-represented minorities among practicing professionals within the state.

The program is currently seeking practicing health care professionals throughout the Upstate region who are interested in developing the career paths of future healthcare professionals. The Health Careers Academy is four years of interactive, academic based activities designed to encourage more minority and disadvantaged students to enter health careers.

Activities demonstrating the use of communications, math and science among practicing health professionals make up the curriculum specifically designed for future health professions students of South Carolina.  


The HCA strives to enhance the diversity in the healthcare workforce by introducing minority students to educational and professional opportunities in healthcare.  For more information on HCA activities, please email

Mapping Your Future is a national collaborative, public-service project of the financial aid industry - bringing together the expertise of the industry to provide free college, career, financial aid, and financial literacy services for students, families, and schools.

Mapping Your Future’s Show Me the Future is a financial literacy and life skills game, designed to help 12-20 year olds prepare for their futures.  The game helps players understand:

  • the cost of living;
  • budgeting, which is vital to financial freedom;
  • the difference between wants and needs;
  • the importance of financial planning;
  • the need to set career goals; and
  • the value of higher education

South Carolina AHEC Health Careers Summer Institute provides a four-day residential opportunity for high school and college students to prepare for entry into a health profession.

South Carolina AHEC Future Health Professionals Academy is a one-week summer program designed to better prepare minority and disadvantaged students for acceptance into South Carolina nursing and dental training programs.

South Carolina AHEC Health Careers Academy is a four year; interactive, academic based program designed to encourage more minority and disadvantaged students to enter health careers.
 

Practicing Professionals Career Update Forms

Upstate AHEC is looking for past members of its Health Career Academy.  If you’ve ever participated in the South Carolina Association of Future Health Professionals or any other healthcare career club in high school or college, click here to download and print out the appropriate form, or click here to access the online form.  If you are working in the healthcare field, please complete the "Career Information Update".  If you are a college student, complete the "Year-End Assessment".  Please fax the completed forms to the Health Career Academy at (864) 349-1179.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Selena Henderson (ldodson@upstateahec.org), or call Missy Dye at (864) 349-1160.  We want to hear about your successful career in healthcare!
