ABOUT US

Upstate Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is a non-profit, community-based organization committed to providing high quality, accessible, educational programs and services designed to meet the specific needs of the health care practitioners, students, and health professions' faculty residing and working in its eleven county service area.

Created in 2001, through the merger of Upper Savannah AHEC, Greenville AHEC, and Spartanburg AHEC, Upstate AHEC's home office is located at 14 Progress Road, Greenville, SC 29607. It is one of four regional centers in the statewide AHEC system which has been serving South Carolina since 1972.

Service Region
Upstate AHEC's primary service area is formed by the eleven counties in South Carolina's northeastern quadrant: Abbeville, Anderson, Edgefield, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Oconee, Pickens, Saluda, and Spartanburg. While Upstate AHEC services are developed based upon the assessed needs of, and marketed to, health care providers in these eleven counties, certain programs are available to organizations and practitioners outside the area.

Key Programs and Services
Continuing Education (CE) Programs - Annually, Upstate AHEC provides more than 250 continuing education programs delivered throughout its eleven county service area and designed to meet the education and training needs of the region's health care workforce. AHEC programs assist health practitioners in expanding their knowledge, increasing their competency, and in maintaining professional licensure and certification.

Health Professions Student (HPS) Programs - Upstate AHEC facilities quality, community-based training in rural and underserved areas for health science students studying medicine, allied health, nursing, public health, pharmacy, dentistry, and social work. Linking health professions students with seasoned community practitioners/preceptors, not only enhances the academic experience, it also increases the likelihood that these students will one day return to practice in the state's medically underserved areas.

Health Careers Program -HCP - Upstate AHEC offers a wide variety of activities designed to guide disadvantaged and underrepresented youth into health careers and to prepare them for success as they enter health care education and training programs. Through collaborations with local high schools, hospitals, and community based organizations, AHEC provides middle, high school, and undergraduate level students with counseling, academic enrichment, mentoring, and scholarship support services.

Upstate AHEC is governed by a thirteen member Board of Directors composed of a community member from each of the eleven counties served, the Upstate AHEC Center Director, and the Executive Director of the SC AHEC.

The Center Director, who is hired by and accountable to the Board, is responsible for the general management and leadership of the organization. Upstate AHEC accomplishes its mission through the efforts of twelve staff members, volunteer advisory boards, and multiple consultants.
